In the mid-1970s, a number of sorors came together to discuss establishing a chapter in the Talladega County area. Many were traveling to the Anniston Alumnae Chapter in Anniston, Alabama to retain active membership in the sorority. Twelve sorors were required to charter a chapter at that time. As sorors were identified in the area, twenty-one agreed to the challenge of doing what was necessary to get a chapter chartered in Talladega County. And so, on May 10, 1977, Talladega County Alumnae Chapter was chartered by the Southern Regional Director, Soror Yvonne Kennedy. Soror Kennedy later became the 19th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and served in that capacity from 1988-1992. The chapter was chartered under the 16th National President, Soror Thelma Thomas Daley, who served from 1975-1979.
With public service as the mission of our sisterhood, the chapter strives to structure activities that will meet the challenges that are handed down from Grand Chapter through the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust and provide whatever service is necessary to meet local needs in the Talladega County Area Community. The five focus areas are: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
-
Economic Development: Focuses on financial literacy, homeownership, and entrepreneurship programs, such as "Financial Fortitude".
-
Educational Development: Targets academic excellence and youth development through initiatives like Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, and EMBODI.
-
International Awareness and Involvement: Promotes global unity, cross-cultural understanding, and projects to support international communities
-
Physical and Mental Health: Promotes healthy lifestyles, mental resilience, and raises awareness about health disparities, particularly in the Black community.
-
Political Awareness and Involvement: Empowers communities through voting rights advocacy, social action, and education on political issues.
These thrusts ensure that all sorority programming aligns with its core mission of public service.
